Chapter Eleven

Christian waited in the doctor’s office and glanced at the clock again. The men outside the door stood like silent sentinels daring anyone but Christian’s doctor to even look their direction. For the last five days, Jared had left him alone in the mornings to go interview the people involved in the case. They’d discuss the interviews when Jared came home. Normally he’d bring home lunch, and they would cook dinner together. They laughed and talked about unimportant shit. Christian found out Jared was ticklish and Jared found out he wasn’t. A smile tugged at his mouth when he remembered Jared’s frustration with that. He wanted more, and that is why this morning after Jared left, his ever changing team of Guardian’s selected protectors had escorted him to this doctor’s appointment—one he’d moved forward without Jared’s knowledge.

He gazed absentmindedly at the gray laminate squares between his shoes. The Jared he’d gotten to know during the last week closely resembled the remarkable man he’d met that first time in South Dakota.

They’d talked for hours about the most random things. The conversations were comfortable and light, nothing too deep or too personal. The casual theme led to his current state of mind—one that whispered Jared would push him away again. The same little voice reminded him that while Jared had admitted his relationship to his family and one co-worker, Christian was a still hidden secret. And damn it, wasn’t that something he’d already said he was okay with? Then why was he going through the mental ping pong game? Christian hated the niggling fear that always seemed to surface. The one that kept a part of him from Jared.

Maybe he was just paranoid. Since Jared’s dictated abstinence until the doctor cleared Christian for physical activity, their contact had been limited to soft caresses and chaste kisses. Jared slept in the guest room, or at least Christian thought he did. He never saw the man go to bed, and he was always dressed and ready for work when Christian woke up. Regardless, Jared allowed him nothing to quench the gut-wrenching need that churned inside him. No matter what he said or did, Jared pulled back and told him they needed to wait.

Maybe Jared didn’t want to take that final step? Frustrations and questions he had no answer for pelted him every minute he was alone in that huge rambling Victorian house. He had way too much time to think. The questions in his mind had turned into silent monsters waiting in the shadows of his consciousness, built up by his inability to act or to ask. Those mental monsters were the reason he was sitting in the doctor’s office a week early. He couldn’t wait. Okay, he probably could, but he wouldn’t. God, his cock desperately hated that decree of Jared’s.

He’d waited three years to make Jared King his, and he’d be damned if he’d wait another night. Yeah, when they’d collided at family gatherings they’d gotten off, but it was angry, primal and fast.
